Captain Coone saves the day for NUIG
NUIG 0-12 Dublin IT 1-8

From the Irish Independent

Friday February 05 2010

nuig skipper Finian Coone converted a last minute free to give his side a winning start to the tournament in wet conditions at Dangan, Galway yesterday.

Dublin IT had two late chances to salvage a draw, but Paul Ryan hit the post with a free from the right-wing and wing-back Michael Maloney was short with a '65' with the game's last puck.

The Galway college seemed poised for an easy win when they raced into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead after just five minutes and they led by 0-9 to 0-3 at the break, with Coone and Galway centre-back John Lee picking off some great points.

But Dublin IT never gave up and a couple of points from Kilkenny star Willie O'Dwyer hauled them back into contention.

A delivery from David Treacy broke in front of the NUIG goal after 49 minutes and Dublin star Ryan pounced to level the match with a first-time strike.

It remained that way until the closing minutes as both sides missed chances due to the tricky conditions, but Coone emerged as the NUIG hero with his late clinching score.

SCORERS -- NUIG: F Coone 0-6 (0-3f), J Lee 0-2, D O'Donovan, S Hennessy, D Barrett, J O'Gorman 0-1 each. Dublin IT: P Ryan 1-4 (0-3f), W O'Dwyer 0-2, P Kelly, H Kehoe 0-1 each.

Canning star of the show as lively LIT scuttle UCC
LIT 3-14 UCC 1-6
From the Irish Independent

Friday February 05 2010

THE scoring brilliance of full-forward Joe Canning inspired LIT to an emphatic victory over UCC in yesterday afternoon's Group A clash in the Mardyke.

Despite the dreadful weather conditions, Galway senior star Canning gave an attacking masterclass as he fired a whopping 3-8 of his side's overall tally.

By half-time he had essentially sealed the game in his side's favour as they held a commanding 3-7 to 0-3 advantage.

The signs looked ominous for UCC when they conceded two early points, before Canning struck for his first goal in the fifth minute, when he found the net after a great pass by Tipperary senior Seamus Callanan.

Seven minutes later Canning did the damage once more, this time Sean Tobin providing the assist as the LIT full-forward obliged with a low shot into the far corner past UCC goalkeeper Matthew Collins.

That pushed LIT 2-4 to 0-1 in front and left reigning champions UCC shell-shocked.

The Cork team attempted to respond through the efforts of Conor O'Sullivan in defence and Brian O'Sullivan at midfield, but they were rocked by a third Canning goal in the 26th minute, which put the game beyond doubt.

Canning dispossessed full-back Richie Foley on the right flank and cut inside before lashing home to complete his hat-trick and send LIT in at the break with a 13-point lead.

It was always going to be an uphill struggle for the Corkmen in the second-half and Canning made their job even harder when he launched two stunning points over the bar after the restart to underline his dominance.

UCC did finally get some joy when full-forward Eoin Murphy found the net in the 39th minute and wing-forward Shane Burke also registered some neat points, but they were never enough to bring them to within striking range.

repelled

By the close of the third quarter UCC trailed 3-11 to 1-5, but not even the introduction of Clare U-21 star Darach Honan at the edge of the square could aid their cause in front of goal as their endeavours were repelled.

LIT's defence, spearheaded by Nicky O'Connell and James McInerney, was excellent all afternoon, and late points by Callanan and Bernard Gaffney sealed their comprehensive win.

However, the day belonged to Canning.

Scorers -- LIT: J Canning 3-8 (0-4f, 0-1 '65), N Quinn, W Hyland, S Tobin, N O'Connell (f), S Callanan, B Gaffney 0-1 each. UCC: E Murphy 1-3 (0-3f), S Burke 0-2, S Moylan 0-1 (0-1f).

LIT -- M Ryan; J Gunning, C Cooney, C Chaplin; N O'Connell, J McInerney, R Sherlock; P O'Brien, S Collins; W Hyland, S Callanan, N Quinn; S Tobin, J Canning, B Gaffney. Subs: J O'Keeffe for Sherlock (55), T Dalton for Cooney (57), P Browne for Canning (60).

UCC -- M Collins; C O'Sullivan, R Foley, C O'Driscoll; A Quilligan, K Hartnett, J Jordan; B O'Sullivan, M Cahill; S Burke, R White, J Halbert; S Moylan, E Murphy, L O'Farrell. Subs: B Beckett for White (half-time), D Honan for Murphy (41), E Martin for Cahill (44), G Mulcahy for Halbert (53), S Corry for Quilligan (60).

Ref -- C McAlister (Cork).

O'Callaghan finds range to inspire UCD fightback
UCD 0-10 CIT 0-8

From the Irish Independent

Friday February 05 2010

SIX unanswered points in the final 20 minutes saw UCD take victory in the opening round clash at a wet CIT yesterday.

Trailing by 0-8 to 0-4 after CIT had extended their half-time lead of 0-5 to 0-2, UCD began to limit the home side's chances and found their range at the other end, with Dublin star David O'Callaghan hitting form.

CIT will wonder how they managed to let such a turnaround take place, but overall they were outplayed, with Cork senior player Patrick Horgan restricted to just three points from play.

CIT were the better team in the first half, however, with points from Tony Murphy and a Horgan free giving the hosts a three-point interval lead.

When play resumed, Horgan twice answered points by O'Callaghan and Maurice Nolan, and when Adrian Mannix sent over a good score on 39 minutes, CIT were four points to the good.

But then the UCD forwards began to motor, with O'Callaghan, John O'Loughlin, Liam Rushe (two) and Joseph Boland (two) hitting the target in the closing stages to secure the victory.

Scorers -- UCD: D O'Callaghan 0-4, J Boland, L Rushe (0-1f, 0-1 '65') 0-2 each, M Nolan (1f), J O'Loughlin 0-1 each. CIT: P Horgan 0-3f, A Mannix, T Murphy 0-2 each, L Desmond 0-1.

UCD -- J Ryan; E O'Shea, S Cummins, O Gough; N Prendergast, D Kenny, D Langton; L Ryan, Rory O'Carroll; M Nolan, J O'Loughlin, J Boland; D O'Callaghan, L Rushe, P Atkinson.

Subs: D O'Connor for Ryan (59), Ross O'Carroll for Atkinson (60).

CIT -- J Condon; E Clancy, C Murphy, J O'Callaghan; L Desmond, R Cashman, S White; B Lawton, S McDonnell; E Dillon, B Corry, A Mannix; P Horgan, C Cusack, T Murphy.

Subs: P Gould for Clancy (h-t), S Corcoran for McDonnell (38), E Keane for C Murphy (59).

REF -- D Copps (Cork).

Goal-hungry UL see off St Pat's
University of Limerick 3-9 St Pat's Drumcondra 0-10

From the Irish Independent

Friday February 05 2010

After losing in last year's final, University of Limerick registered an opening-round win following a mud-soaked battle with St Patrick's, Drumcondra, at Plassey yesterday.

The home side's ability to find the net was to ultimately prove the difference between the sides in a game where scores were by and large hard to come by.

UL's three goals -- courtesy of Thomas Connors and Shane Dooley in the first-half, and Matt Ruth nine minutes from time -- offset the marvellous scoring contribution made by St Pat's centre-forward Marcus O hAitrigin. The big centre-forward finished with seven points of his team's total.

Connors' goal gave UL a 1-3 to 0-5 lead after 15 minutes, but the momentum was quickly snatched back through a rousing point from Pat's JJ Farrell. Paidi MacEochaidh's subsequent score was answered by UL in the form of Dooley's goal which left the hosts 2-3 to 0-7 up at the break.

UL came out strong in the second half and Ruth's three-pointer fired them into a five-point lead heading into the final quarter, and the Limerick side were not troubled from then on.

Scorers -- UL: T Connors 1-2, R O'Dwyer 0-3, S Dooley, M Ruth 1-0 each, D Burke 0-2 (1f), S Hickey, A Quinn 0-1 each. St Patrick's: M O hAitrigin 0-7 (3f, 1 '65), P MacEochaidh 0-2, JJ Farrell 0-1.

UL -- J Dempsey; P Stapleton, C Fogarty, M Verney; K Joyce, J Devane, M Walsh; S Hickey, B Carroll; N O Murchu, R O'Dwyer, T Connors; S Dooley, A Quinn, M Ruth. Subs: M Gleeson for S Dooley, M Heffernan for A Quinn, D Burke for B Carroll, P Murphy for M Ruth, K Fox for M Walsh.

St Patrick's -- E O'Reilly; E Kerins, D Mac an Fhiadóir, A Murphy; R Nolan, P Brennan, S Campion; JJ Farrell, E O Duill; A Cummins, M O hAitrigin, P MacEochaidh; T O'Brien, I Duggan, C Maher. Subs: K Moloney for D Mac an Fhiadoir, D O Diarmada for A Cummins.

Ref -- Michael O'Connor (Limerick).

Saw the second half of the UCD match. Thought Galway were much stronger, and their backs were particularly dominant. The referee was atrocious, and his decisions were often unfathomable, leading in one instance to a goal from a free that panicked UCD a fiar bit until the last few minutes when they started to regain their composure.

Sorry wouldn't be familiar with the teams so I wasn't able to put names on anything, although if I'm not mistaken, Liam Rushe was taking UCD's frees. Nice to see Dubs making the UCD team now, and he was very assured from dead balls.

Very enjoyable game, pity croke park don't put a bit of marketing beihind competitions like this and the inter pros.

Look at all the hype that will be built up around the aussie rules series later this year and you can see what the GAA could do for these excellent competitions.
